In the northern lowland plains, Caño Negro is seasonally flooded, forming lakes and marshes that are home to many different species, especially birds. In the dry season, the area is reduced to little lagoons, river channels and strips of riverbank inhabited by many different birds.
The protected area of Monteverde was created in 1972 by scientists and resident Quaker pioneers from the USA, who were all concerned about the impact of colonization on the cloud forest. Now known as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve,
Arenal is one of the most famous national parks of Costa Rica, featuring the active cone-shaped Arenal Volcano as the main attraction. The Arenal, with an altitude of 1´633m above sea level, was very active in the period from 1968 to 2010 and was considered one of the 10 most active volcanoes on Earth for a long time. At the moment, it shows rather little activity.
This national park, created in 1995, includes the Tenorio Volcano (1´916m / 6´286ft), the famous Rio Celeste (Sky Blue River), and wonderful rainforests and cloud forests.
Miravalles Volcano, the highest of the volcanic Guanacaste Range, soars 2´028m (6´654ft) above sea level. The summit is usually covered in thick clouds and frequent rain.
