The protected area of Monteverde was created in 1972 by scientists and resident Quaker pioneers from the USA, who were all concerned about the impact of colonization on the cloud forest. Now known as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve,
it is one of the most visited private reserves and best-kept cloud forests in the country. Called cloud forest due to its elevation of 1´440m (4´724ft) above sea level, it is a place of astounding beauty and biodiversity. Some of the best bird watching in Costa Rica can be done here. The Resplendent Quetzal, the holy bird of the Maya, can be seen on Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, as well as many other amazing species.
