This area protects one of the most developed coral reefs of the Caribbean Coast, which is one of the most important in Costa Rica. It also protects a small area of swamp forest and beautiful white-sand beaches. The reef consists of 240 hectares (593 acres) around Cahuita Point,
a site endangered by the build-up of silt and other sediments from rivers. Birds and other wildlife are plentiful in the park.
