Caño Island is located about 20km (12mi) directly off the coast of the Osa Peninsula in the Pacific Ocean. The waters surrounding the island are perfect for snorkelling to see large schools of brightly coloured tropical fish. Marine mammals that can be seen around the island include common dolphins,
bottlenose dolphins, and migrating humpback whales. The existence of stone spheres, tombs with stone statues, golden votive offerings, and ceramics suggest that the island was used as a burial ground during the pre-Columbian period.
