This national park was created to protect coral and rocky reefs in Bahía de Coronado, in the southern region of Costa Rica. Parque Nacional Marino Ballena is rich in scenic beauty.
This sector may also be the southernmost mating site of the humpback whale, an endangered species. They mate near the Baja California peninsula in North America and migrate to tropical and subtropical waters during the winter.
