The Tapantí National Park protects large forested areas in the northern Talamanca Mountain Range, including Cerro de la Muerte. The park covers 48km2 (18mi2) of untouched cloud forest at elevations that vary from 1´220 to 2´438m (4´000 to 8´000ft).
It is home to profuse plant life, especially orchids, and exotic wildlife like Resplendent Quetzals and tapirs. The Grand Orosi River flows through the park, with many other rivers and creeks joining it. This is one of the rainiest regions of the country with annual average precipitation of 6,500mm (256 in). The abundant water is used for generating electricity and water supply for a large part of the population.
