The Rincón de la Vieja National Park was established in 1973 to protect the flora, fauna and groundwater around the volcano. The summit of the volcano is 1´895m above sea level, and its active crater releases steam and gases as well as eruptions every now and then.
A very interesting attraction is the circular hiking trail Las Pailas, where you can observe geysers and bubbling mud holes, the impressive vegetation with huge trees and a seasonal waterfall.
